Recent American developments in the debate over the legal and ethical aspects of withholding or withdrawing life-sustaining technologies are reported, and details are given of a 1983 California case involving charges brought against physicians who disconnected a severely brain-damaged patient from life-support systems. Professional organizations and governments at the state and federal levels have responded to the dilemmas of managing dying patients with a flurry of statements, guidelines, bills, and rules that often feed the conflicts they are intended to resolve. Emerging concern with the economics of death-prolonging procedures will certainly intensify the debate. (KIE abstract)en
