AID and the Single Welfare Mother
Steinfels, Margaret O'Brien
Hastings Center Report. 1983 Feb; 13(1): 22-23.
A hypothetical case is presented concerning indignant community reaction to the artificial insemination of an unmarried woman who then applied for public assistance. The woman had misrepresented to the physician her intention of seeking welfare benefits for herself and the child. Two commentaries discuss the conflicting moral and legal obligations of the physician and the rights and obligations of single mothers, welfare recipients, their children, and society. (KIE abstract)
