Cutting the Thread and Pulling the Wool -- a Request for Euthanasia in General Practice
Campbell, Alastair V.
Journal of Medical Ethics. 1983 Mar; 9(1): 45-49.
Higgs describes a case in which a British general practitioner is asked by a woman who is terminally ill with cancer, and who lives a secluded life and has made a practice of befriending only her physician, for assistance in terminating her life. The physician declines to assist her but promises to keep her out of pain and provides her with a large quantity of opiates; the woman eventually dies without having touched the opiates. In separate commentaries, Brendan Callaghan, Gregory Stone, Luke Zander, and A.V. Campbell discuss the legal and ethical implications of the physician's actions. (KIE abstract)
