The problems faced by physicians as expert witnesses were discussed by attorney Oliver Schroeder at the annual meeting of the American Academy of Forensic Sciences in Anaheim, Calif. Ethical dilemmas are compounded by the difficulty of remaining impartial in the adversarial process. Both plaintiffs and defendents should have equal access to the expert's knowledge. A related editorial by George D. Lundberg in the same journal issue focuses on the desirability of having the court appoint impartial experts and reaffirms the American Medical Association's policy on the physician's duty to remain objective when testifying.
