Bill Introduced to Thwart Kidney Brokerage
JAMA. 1983 Nov 4; 250(17): 2263-2264.
Plans by Dr. Harvey Barry Jacobs to set up a brokerage mechanism to match persons wishing to sell and buy kidneys for transplantation have resulted in a bill before the U.S. House of Representatives that would prohibit sales of human organs. The bill, introduced by Congressman Albert Gore, Jr. (D-Tenn.), also calls for a National Center for Organ Transplantation to coordinate existing organ procurement agencies into a network. Jacobs, who has begun contacting hospital administrators about the costs of doing nephrectomies and transplantations, may move his brokerage abroad if the legislation passes. (KIE abstract)
