Why the Soviet Psychiatrists Resigned
Lancet. 1983 Mar 12; 1(8324): 582.
In January 1983 the Soviet All Union Society of Neuropathologists and Psychiatrists (AUSNP) resigned its membership in the World Psychiatric Association, accusing that organization of lending its support to allegations that psychiatry in the USSR is used for political ends. AUSNP objections to WPA policies and procedures, and its dissatisfaction with Western attitudes in general toward Soviet psychiatry are summarized, as are the contents of a response drafted by WPA officials to the AUSNP resignation letter.
