The Tyranny of the Normal
Fiedler, Leslie A.
Hastings Center Report. 1984 Apr; 14(2): 40-42.
In a paper originally presented at a conference on the care of impaired newborns, the author discusses attitudes toward normality, congenital malformations, and "freaks" of nature as expressed in art, literature, and social mores. He attributes discomfort with the handicapped to a primitive fear of the abnormal, exacerbated by guilt. (KIE abstract)
