Faith Healing, Christian Science, and the Medical Care of Children
New England Journal of Medicine. 1983 Dec 29; 309(26): 1639-1641.
Swan, a former Christian Scientist whose child died of meningitis after treatment by a Christian Science practitioner, now heads a group called Children's Healthcare Is A Legal Duty, Inc. She explains how the Christian Science church has achieved official sanction of spiritual treatment as lawful medical care, exempt from child neglect and public health laws. Swan argues that the state should recognize only secular, state-licensed health care as appropriate for children, and that it has a duty to protect them from parents who would deny appropriate care in the name of religion.
