Effects of U.S. Decision to Withdraw Aid for Worldwide Family Planning Programmes
Lancet. 1985 Jan 12; 1(8420): 97.
The United States government has decided to discontinue the contribution of substantial funds to the International Planned Parenthood Federation (IPPF) on the grounds of not supporting organizations that "actively promote abortion in other countries." IPPF maintains a policy of respecting the autonomy of its members in the conduct of their family planning programs. The organization contends that a loss of funds from the U.S. will result in increasing numbers of abortions because family planning and contraceptive services will not be available. (KIE abstract)
