A brief announcement is made that Britain's Medical Research Council and the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists have jointly set up a voluntary licensing authority for human in vitro fertilization and embryo transfer. The authority will approve a code of practice for research related to human fertilization and embryology, and will invite all those engaged in research on in vitro fertilization to submit their work for approval and licensing. It will be chaired by Dame Mary Donaldson. A list of the authority's 14 members is provided in the announcement. (KIE abstract)
