The Council of the British Medical Association (BMA) has approved a document responding to many of the recommendations of the July 1984 report of the Committee of Inquiry into Human Fertilisation and Embryology (the Warnock Committee report). The BMA document supports the Warnock proposal for a licensing authority to regulate research and certain infertility services, and endorses the report's recommendation that research on fertilized ova should be completed within a maximum of 14 days. Although detailed consideration of the Warnock recommendations on surrogate parenthood was deferred, the BMA report supports the government's plan to introduce legislation banning commercial surrogate arrangements.
