Abstract
Speaking at a Townswomen's Guild forum on the Warnock report on in vitro fertilization, British embryologist Robert Edwards argued in defense of research on human embryos, which is currently threatened by Enoch Powell's Unborn Children (Protection) Bill before Parliament. Edwards contended that embryo research could yield benefits in improved understanding of many diseases, as well as in alleviating infertility. He also criticized specific features of Powell's bill, and noted that its requirement that all fertilized embryos be returned to the woman's womb would actually be unethical in the case of abnormal embryos.
