Legislation to govern in vitro fertilization (IVF) pending in the parliament of Australia's State of Victoria has been overtaken by events. The 1984 Infertility (Medical Procedures) Bill, resulting from recommendations of the Waller Committee, was deferred until the Fall 1984 parliamentary session after critics called for further discussion. Two other committee reports offering public policy recommendations on the use of freeze-thawed embryos, surplus embryos, and surrogate mothers, are due in mid to late 1984--months after the births of infants conceived using the first two procedures.
