An overview is provided of the vaccine compensation controversy that has arisen in the United States as a rash of lawsuits over alleged injuries caused by pertussis immunizations has led public health officials to worry about the impact on childhood immunization programs. Also discussed are efforts underway to assess, and ultimately improve, the relative safety and efficacy of the pertussis vaccine. (KIE abstract)en
