Elderly residents of the Mather Home in Evanston, Illinois, are requested to read descriptions of the purpose, nature, and outcomes of cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and then to state on a witnessed document their wishes regarding future use of CPR on themselves. Of the 152 competent residents who signed forms when the procedure was instituted, 11 wanted CPR, 77 did not, and 64 wanted the physician to make the decision as necessary. Although the legal status of these documents has never been tested, they do meet the guidelines of the President's Commission for the Study of Ethical Problems in Medicine and Biomedical and Behavioral Research.
