Every Consultation Has an Ethical Component
Bradley, Patricia A.
BMJ (British Medical Journal). 1983 Aug 6; 287(6389): 399-400.
Analyzing the scenario of a large, poor family's request to be added to the patient list of three British National Health Service physicians, Bradley demonstrates how even routine practice decisions can have ethical components. One partner labels the family as potentially heavy users of medical care and recommends that it be referred elsewhere. The second doctor suggests adding the family to their list on a trial basis, while the third thinks it should be accepted without reservations. They use concepts of duty, justice, utilitarianism, rights, nonmaleficence, and professional ideals in arguing their positions. Ultimately, Bradley concludes, the question is one of physician versus patient autonomy. (KIE abstract)
