Journal of Medical Ethics. 1984 Sep; 10(3): 155-157.
Harris criticizes a companion article by Simon A. Brooks in which Brooks rejects a utilitarian approach to medical ethics in favor of Hippocratic individualism. While supporting many of Brooks' concerns regarding treatment of the elderly, Harris criticizes his alarmist projections and their attribution to a too broadly defined "utilitarian" ethic. Harris advocates widening the debate about ethical issues in medicine beyond the circle of health professionals or particular moral theories. (KIE abstract)
