The imminent development of a test and a screening program to detect antibodies to the viral agent for the acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) in the U.S. blood supply has provided the impetus to undertake a research project before screening begins, to study the natural development of AIDS. Curran discusses the policy issues involved in the program, including the ethical questions of whether donors of stored blood samples should be told when the screening test detects AIDS antibody and whether recipients of blood later found to be contaminated should be so informed. In both cases, he favors the disclosure of such information. (KIE abstract)en
