The Subject Is Baby Fae
Capron, Alexander M.
McCormick, Richard A.
Hastings Center Report. 1985 Feb; 15(1): 8-13.
Capron objects to two aspects of the Baby Fae baboon heart transplant at Loma Linda University Medical Center: the mass media coverage and the use of a child for a high-risk experiment. Regan contends that it was immoral to sacrifice the baboon. Reemtsma, a surgeon, believes that the transplant was clinically justifiable and that the media coverage of the case was sensationalistic. Sheldon, chairman of the Institutional Review Board at Loma Linda, discusses the ethics committee's role in the case. McCormick highlights four concerns: nontherapeutic research on infants, use of animal hearts in humans, the hospital's failure to release some crucial information, and the secrecy of ethics committee deliberations. Senator Gore regrets that no attempt was made to find a human heart and calls for a partnership between medicine and society to solve the organ shortage problem. (KIE abstract)
