The author describes her emotional dilemma as she watches the breathing body of a patient in a persistent vegetative state. As a doctor, she recognizes the advances medicine has made in the treatment of trauma victims. However, she advocates wider discussion of care for those who have been in a coma for years, lack sentience or awareness, form no relationships, and have no prospect for recovery. (KIE abstract)
