Infection-Control Guidelines for Patients With the Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome (AIDS)

Reported here are guidelines developed by a University of California, San Francisco, Task Force concerning the care of patients with AIDS. Areas of disagreement among Task Force members are also discussed. Among the issues addressed by the guidelines are the definition of AIDS, physician responsibility for diagnosing and reporting the disease, precautions to be taken by personnel caring for AIDS patients, refusal to care for AIDS patients, resuscitation of AIDS patients, hospital employees with AIDS, and AIDS patients in outpatient facilities. Task Force members disagreed over the use of masks by AIDS patients, visitors, and health personnel, the isolation of AIDS patients in private hospital rooms, and the removal of health workers with AIDS from direct contact with patients.
