Two commentaries consider the conflicts of interest created by a community hospital's policy of paying $100 to residents on a case when they obtain consent from the next-of-kin for a postmortem examination. Both commentaries find the hospital's effort to increase the number of autopsies performed to be a morally acceptable goal because of the tremendous educational and diagnostic value of such examinations, but they disagree about the ethical propriety of a cash incentive as the means to attain this goal. The commentator opposed to this program argues that by bribing residents it corrupts them and their relationship with the next-of-kin; instead, the hospital should teach residents why autopsies are important, how to request them, and why respect for the dead strictly limits them in the law of the Orthodox Jewish community that the hospital serves.
