Ethics Committees and Cost Containment
Brock, Dan W.
Hastings Center Report. 1990 Mar/Apr; 20(2): 29-31.
Brock discusses the expected benefits and risks should hospital ethics committees begin to assist their institutions' efforts to contain costs. Management decisions regarding cost containment that affect patient care have an ethical impact and are properly the concern of ethics committees. Brock cautions that, while enhancing patient care is the goal of ethics committees, nonselective involvement in cost containment decisions could threaten committee integrity and effectiveness.
