Abstract
At present, British researchers conducting multi-center clinical trials must submit their proposals for review to the local ethics committee in each center. This method of review is lengthy and cumbersome and at times results in a project's being approved by some committees while being rejected or modified by others. Here Macara reviews the arguments for and against the creation of a national ethics committee to expedite review of national or multi-center research proposals. (KIE abstract)
