What Transplantation Can Teach Us About Health Care Reform
New England Journal of Medicine. 1994 Mar 24; 330(12): 858-860.
The success of the national network for organ procurement and allocation has been noteworthy. Issues of scarcity have been confronted, the system closed, and questions of justice squarely addressed. Serving both individual and social interests without betraying either, the system gives appropriate place to the role of the community in health care policy. Experience with organ transplantation may teach us that some of the thorniest difficulties associated with rationalizing medical care are within our power to resolve. In so doing, it may give us heart.
