In this article, we report the responses of seriously ill patients who were asked how long they would want to live, and what percentage of their life savings they would be willing to spend, if their treatment left them totally dependent on family and friends for daily care. We carried out this study from February 1992 through July 1993, a time when physician-assisted suicide and euthanasia were not legally available and not offered as options to the patients. Our purpose was to determine how long patients would want to live and what percentage of their life savings they would be willing to spend if their treatment left them totally dependent on family and friends for daily care. The study was designed to provide evidence about the degree that patients consider being a burden on others and the cost of treatment in their decisions to terminate or continue life.
