A 'Code of Patients' Rights' for New Zealand Rethinking Children's Rights
Health Care Analysis. 1997 Mar; 5(1): 43-55.
Last year, a Code of Patients' Rights became law in New Zealand. Ron Paterson, who helped draft the Code, reviews its genesis and its provisions in our first article. We also look at new proposals in England for clearer legal recognition of the rights of child-patients and we examine the Charter of Services for Children and Young People published last year. Laws underpinning patients' rights support rather than challenge best current practice but their effectiveness must depend on their impact. If charters and codes can capture the attention of patients and professionals alike, such forms of law may well proliferate.
