dc.description[MD] *HPA Number: 2003-200 *Building Name: Atlas Theater and Shops *Address(es): 1313-1333 H St. NW *Summary:* Atlas Performing Arts Center ("Applicant") sought approval of an application to subdivide five existing record lots (1313-1333 H Street, N.W.) into a single record lot. The affected property is an individually designated historic landmark listed in the District of Columbia Inventory of Historic Sites. The subdivision was sought for the purpose of obtaining the permits necessary for conversion of the Atlas Theater and Shops into a performing arts center. This adaptive reuse of a long-dormant structure, which had been granted conceptual approval by the Historic Preservation Review Board, would include facade restoration and construction of an addition to the theater. The Mayor's Agent concluded that approval of the application was necessary in the public interest because the proposed subdivision was consistent with the purposes of D.C. Law 2-144. *Consistent with Purposes of the Act:* The Mayor's Agent determined that the proposed subdivision was consistent with the purposes of the Act as described in §6-1101(b)(2), because it would enhance the significant character of the Atlas Theater and Shops by allowing for the issuance of permits necessary for its complete rehabilitation and restoration, as well as the creative adaptive reuse of the landmark. -----en
