Pacific Reporter, 2d Series, 641: 704-708
The Washington Supreme Court affirmed the decision of the Superior Court, Pierce County, in ruling that the physician-patient privilege did not apply in involuntary commitment proceedings where the issue was whether further treatment was needed after the statutory 14-day initial detention period. The patients had been told that interviews with an attending psychiatrist were not confidential and had not been told that the interviews were intended solely for treatment purposes. Therefore, the psychiatrists were properly permitted to assess the patients' mental conditions based on interviews with them. (KIE abstract)
