This paper was submitted to the symposium held by the Islamic Organization for Medical Sciences (IOMS) in Kuwait during the period 18-21 April 1987 on some medical practices from an Islamic ethical perspective. After reviewing the ethical aspects of virginity as outlined in early Islamic literature, the author argues that hymen reconstruction is a new topic which was not discussed by classical Muslim religious scholars. He concludes that hymen reconstruction cannot be justified on the ground of any ethical principle in Islam.
