Abstract
This paper was submitted to the symposium held by the Islamic Organization for Medical Sciences (IOMS) during the period 24-25 November 1988 in Cairo on the ethical dimensions of health policy from an Islamic perspective. The author argues that organ donation is a new issue in Islamic jurisprudence which necessitates fresh independent legal reasoning (ijtihåd) by elaborating on specific legal maxims. He concludes that organ donation is, under specific conditions, permitted in Islam.
