This paper was submitted to the symposium held by the Islamic Organization for Medical Sciences (IOMS) during the period 24-25 November 1988 in Cairo on the ethical dimensions of health policy from an Islamic perspective. The paper presents first how classical Muslim religious scholars understood the body-soul relationship which is an important criterion for defining death. The author concludes that brain death should be seen as an acceptable death criterion from an Islamic perspective.en
