This paper was submitted to the symposium held by the Islamic Organization for Medical Sciences (IOMS) during the period 24-25 November 1988 in Cairo on the ethical dimensions of health policy from an Islamic perspective. The author argues that suffering and pain, from an Islamic ethical perspective, do not justify the practice of euthanasia. On the other hand, withholding futile treatment which is permissible in Islam should not be equated with the forbidden euthanasia.en
