During the period 24-25 November 1988, the Islamic Organization for Medical Sciences (IOMS) held a symposium in Cairo on the ethical dimensions of health policy from an Islamic perspective. This symposium was held in cooperation with the Council for International Organizations of Medical Sciences (CIOMS). The full proceedings of this symposium were published in this volume which was divided into two parts. The first part, ?sanctity of human life?, deals with different topics such as old-age health problems, euthanasia and the concepts of life and death. The second part, ?Islamic values, ethics and behavior,? focuses on promoting health from an Islamic perspective. Two papers in this part analyze Freud?s theories from an Islamic viewpoint.
