Abstract
A curriculum developed by Peter Angelos, M.D., Ph.D. and Debra A. DeRosa, Ph.D. to educate surgery residents at Northwestern University about ethics in surgery. The curriculum includes text (3-ring binder), overhead transparencies, and two videos "Principles for Communicating Bad News" and "Advanced Directives and Withdrawal/Withholding of Treatment" that correspond to sections in the curriculum. Topics covered: General Strategies for Facilitating the Ethics Section; Introduction to Ethics Curriculum; DNR Orders and Communicating Bad news; Advance Directives and Withdrawal or Withholding Treatment; and Informed Consent and Jeopardy Questions/Transparencies. The curriculum development was supported by a grant from the Central Surgical Association Foundation.
