This paper was submitted to the symposium held by the Islamic Organization for Medical Sciences (IOMS)in Kuwait during the period 13-15 October 1998 on genetics. After giving brief information about the nature of the human genome, genetic engineering, and gene therapy, the author discusses these three basic issues and other related ones from the viewpoint of Islamic jurisprudence. He argues that applying gene therapy techniques would be much less problematic, from an Islamic juristic perspective, than employing the techniques of genetic engineering and genetic mutation.
