This paper was submitted to the symposium held by the Islamic Organization for Medical Sciences (IOMS) during the period 18-21 October 1999 on ethical issues related to aging. The first part of this paper explains the technical terms used for expressing the aged in Islamic literature and in modern legal systems especially in Kuwait. The second part elaborates on the ethical aspects of dealing with this group of people as detailed in Islamic jurisprudence and philosophy and as applied in Islamic history. The author focuses on the role of religious endowments (awqaf) in this respect.
